The Xakanaxa pride, well the 5 lionesses and 5 cubs, as the males are still hanging around with the 2 interloper lionesses with the new cubs (Click here to see the story), have headed south towards Bodumatau, presumably in search of buffalo (Syncerus caffer). It is not uncommon for males to move with different groups of females within their territory, but it has now been about 3 weeks that the males have been absent from the pride and the more they are away, the more chance nomadic males have of moving in. The lioness pictured below was seen, a couple…

After hearing reports of 2 leopard (Panthera pardus) being sighted in the 4th Bridge area, we headed there in the hope of sighting one. This would be our first leopard sighting in nearly a month. We found a young male, our most seen leopard, but he was not looking his normal relaxed self. During the night a nearby campsite had heard the growls and scuffles of leopards and in the morning it was clear that this young male was not the victor. The leopard was unable to put any weight onto his front left leg. On closer inspection there was…

While on my way out of Moremi this morning, I sighted the resident pack of wild dogs (Lycaon pictus). The pack was moving slowly on the edge on the mopane fringing the Xakanaxa airstrip.

It is unlikely that the Xakanaxa lions (Panthera leo) will be having any new additions to their pride this year. This does not mean that there will be no other cubs in this area of Moremi. The Xakanaxa pride males have been seen on numerous occasions mating with 2 interloper lionesses, after they chased off a younger male whom was travelling with the lionesses. Click here to see the video. These lionesses are usually seen around the 4th Bridge area, but the young male has not been sighted for over 6 months. The interloper lionesses were located with the Xakanaxa…

In the early days of Earth Touch the crew was based out of Okavango Horse Safaris. I was there recently and Sarah Humble passed on a document she wrote at the time, it makes for some interesting reading… As you know, Earth-Touch film crews have been operating out of the Okavango Horse Safaris basecamp for quite some time now. These boys try to convince us and the rest of the world no doubt, that they are epitomies of ruggedness and posessors of unbounded bush savvy. They are in fact just snivelling wimps who are continually whining about the weather and…

I’d lost about a pint of blood to mosquitoes and was unable to stand still for itching. I wasn’t so sure this was the best idea anymore. It seemed right at the time. October 24th was the day to do something. There were over 5200 events scheduled to take place in 181 countries for people to raise awareness of climate change and call on governments to do something about it. I thought I should join the cause that 350.org had coordinated. I could have gone and built sandcastles on Durban’s beaches and watched a rising tide drown them. But somehow…
