Extreme aggression in first stages of mating
There is nothing romantic about lions mating. It is an extremely aggressive interaction, especially in the early stages. Males have recurved hooks on the end of their penises and when they withdraw, after biting the back of the lioness’ neck, this stimulates her and she will turn on him, swiping, snarling and biting.

Lions continue to gorge on elephant
The Xakanaxa pride continue to gorge themselves on the elephant kill. After such lean times of late, they are making the most of this substantial meal. There is more than the usual amount of aggression between pride members which is a sign of their desperation.
