Lion cub plays with scaly anteater

25 Jul

Let’s say it’s a boring, hot Monday in the Okavango. Most of the lion pride are doing what they do best: sleeping. So what might a restless lion cub do to pass the time?

Maybe a little game of “cat and pangolin“?

Lion cub eyes the pangolin.

Who goes here? The scaly shape of a pangolin, a type of anteater, appears out of the undergrowth.

Lion paws the pangolin.

A little exploratory tap. Pangolins are rarely seen in these parts - which might explain the cub's curiosity.

Rolled up in a defensive ball, the pangolin is protected by its scaly, armoured exterior.

Lion tries to chew through the pangolin's scales.

A change of tactics: when all else fails, chew on it.

Lion tries to chew through the pangolin's scales.

Cub teeth: 0 | Pangolin armour: 1

Lion cub rests after its efforts with the pangolin in its clutches.

The pangolin proves impenetrable, but the cub's not quite ready to relinquish its new toy.
