Opportunistic hunter: Leopard kills a vervet monkey

8 Aug

Our film crews in the field have notched up some pretty remarkable wildlife encounters over the years. And few animal sightings are more exciting than a big predator on the hunt. Leopards are probably the most opportunistic of the big cats – when an ambitious hunt fails to produce results they’ll quite happily settle for a more modest meal. Which is exactly what happened when this particular male leopard embarked on a hunt in a wildlife reserve in Botswana’s Okavango region. When the alarm calls of vervet monkeys alerted his impala prey to his presence, the cat quickly changed tactics and snatched a primate meal instead.

On the alert. These impalas won't be a leopard's dinner today.

Impressive canines they may be, but they're not enough to ward off a leopard.

It's not exactly a feast, but leopards take what they can catch.
