Blacktip sharks unsettle divers Apr 11 2008
The visibility wasn’t great and the water was filled with jellyfish when the Earth-Touch crew went freediving at Aliwal Shoal, off the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) seemed excitable, passing close to the camera, and the crew felt rather uneasy.

In perfect blue water at Aliwal Shoal, on the KwaZulu-Natal coast of South Africa, the Earth-Touch crew was joined by a crowd of blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) and then some tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier, pictured here).

Things often happen while we are filming for Earth-Touch that we cannot show on video for practical reasons. Animals sometimes surprise us with their antics, and catch us off guard. Sometimes these stories can only be told with words – like what happened to me out at Aliwal Shoal yesterday.

Last weekend’s killing of tiger sharks in a protected area caused an uproar, thanks to growing awareness of the animal’s value.

Sodwana Bay in summer means one thing for me: ragged-tooth sharks in clear blue water. In mid to late summer, females settle on some of the Maputaland reefs for their gestation period.
They are among my favourite subjects, but it’s not without difficulty that we get decent footage of their behaviour. During this gestation period, the animals go into self-preservation mode and are very shy and difficult to approach. When we dive on scuba they flee to the edge of our visibility.

Having returned from the Cape and the lazy, lumbering whales, I was reminded on my return to KwaZulu-Natal, a province on the eastern side of South Africa, why I like diving with sharks so much.
Did you know? Tiger sharks Oct 26 2007
The tiger shark is one of the largest sharks, growing to 3 or 4m (10 to 13ft) in length and weighing upwards of 350kg (772lb).
Did you know? Wrecks form coral reefs Sep 25 2007
Shipwrecks often form natural coral reefs alive with colourful corals and an abundance of underwater life, as is illustrated in the Nebo shipwreck.
The Nebo was a 2000-ton steamship that sank off the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal in 1884, on her maiden voyage from Sunderland in the United Kingdom to Durban, South Africa. It was carrying a railway bridge for Amanzimtoti, a town just south of Durban, aboard, when it sank. It now lies upside down about 1km (0.62mi) north-west of Aliwal Shoal.

Ragged-tooth Romeos wait to mate Aug 5 2007
By Graeme Duane, field crew
The dud sardine run has triggered what seems to be a seasonal ragged-tooth shark migration to the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, where they will mate. In recent weeks, weve come across growing numbers of these big sharks, which divers refer to affectionately as raggies in the deep caves of Aliwal Shoal, a sandstone ridge teeming with sea life about 5km (3mi) out to sea from the town of Umkomaas. The males seem to arrive first, almost waiting with bated breath for the females, who havent shown up yet.
Latest story: Turtle in a watery abyss Jul 25 2007
Our coastal crew has been exploring the Indian Ocean for some months now.
The latest video package published today, Turtle and dolphins in reef dive, took place in a world-renowned reef, the Aliwal Shoal, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
