Did you know? African penguin May 12 2008

image

Formerly known as the jackass penguin, the African penguin (Spheniscus dermersus) got its original name from its call, which is uncannily similar to that of a donkey.

African penguins are endemic to the Southern African countries of South Africa and Namibia, and mostly occur within a few kilometeres of the coastline. Non-breeding birds spend most of their time at sea.

A fruitful wait at the river pool Apr 8 2008

image

Sometimes, it pays just to sit and wait. When the Earth-Touch crew arrived at a pool in a tributary of the Black Umfolozi River in South Africa’s Imfolozi Game Reserve, they decided just to enjoy the view and see what happened.

From the field

Unusual elephant noise Nov 27 2007

Waking up to the distinctive trill of the woodland kingfishers and the cacophony of sound created by the morning calls of the coucals, doves, warblers and other Okavango Delta birds is one of the more pleasurable experiences in life. These rich, evocative sounds are matched only by the evening orchestra of these same species as they prepare to retire for the night.

Earth-Touch users can share this pleasure by listening to an array of wildlife sounds from the Earth-Touch footage.

From the field

Sunrise, sunset Sep 20 2007

By Andy Crawford, field crew

The end of each day in the bush is always a strange and wonderful time. Wherever I am at sunset (usually up to the elbows in plastic fish, ducks and crocodiles while bathing kiddies in a tin bath under an acacia tree) the soft orange glow on the trees, evening birdcalls and insect going-to-bed noises invariably make me pause and take notice.

It is an evocative time, a time to reflect on the day that has been and the night that is to come – with all its potential for drama and danger.
