Did you know? Oxpeckers on the back of mammals Jan 30 2008

Oxpeckers are often seen on the backs of animals like hippo, buffalo and kudu. They feed off parasites such as ticks and bloodsucking flies that live on the mammal’s skin. These birds have a mutual relationship with mammals, removing parasites in exchange for observing the surroundings from an aerial viewpoint and alerting them of danger.

Did you know? Hippopotamus Nov 30 2007

The name hippopotamus comes from the Greek word hippopotamos, which means water or river horse. This refers to the herbivore’’s habitat.

When exposed to harsh sunlight, hippos secrete a reddish-pink substance from their subdermal glands. This ‘blood sweat’ protects the skin from the sun and inhibits dehydration.

Waiting for the rain Oct 3 2007

The Earth-Touch footage coming through from Meno A Kwena camp in the Boteti region of the Kalahari, Botswana, epitomises life in the desert… harsh. This applies even though the Kalahari is considered semi-desert as opposed to true desert, and the tips of the waterways of the Okavango Delta are in close proximity.
