Squid eyes under the knife Jun 11 2008

image

What has eyes the size of dinner plates, fearsome suckers that cling to its prey, razor-sharp hooks to shred its victims and two beaks to crush the remains?  It’s the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) – an elusive “killing machine” from the dark depths of Antarctic seas.

Great white shark’s hunting kit Apr 3 2008

The great white shark senses what’s going on around it using its eyesight, special cells along its lateral line, and sensory cells on its nose, called ampullae of Lorenzini, which detect electrical fields.

Fledglings prepare for flight Jan 30 2008

Yellow-billed kites (Milvus migrans parasitus) are opportunistic feeders. They glide through the air, scanning the ground for carcasses of dead animals, or for small live prey such as lizards, locusts and frogs.

The adult kite that Earth-Touch has been tracking attends to its chicks’ needs, but soon it will be vital for these young fledglings to learn the ultimate survival skill, flight.

Did You Know? Coyotes Jan 29 2008

The coyotes (Canis latrans) found in Yellowstone National Park are among the largest in the United States; adults average about 14kg (30lb). They are slighter in build than their relative, the grey wolf (Canis lupus), but can kill large prey, especially when hunting co-operatively. Such attacks can go on for hours.

Did you know? Lion feeding Nov 5 2007

Lions often behave aggressively towards one another at kills. To survive, they require energy in the form of food, and will do almost anything to get it.

The more lions at the kill and the smaller the prey, the more intense the competition for sustenance. On the rare occasion, these fights may even result in death or severe injury.

Did you know? African fish eagle Oct 2 2007

This fairly large eagle is related to the North American bald eagle, and looks quite similar. As its name suggests, the African fish eagle feeds mainly on fish but it has been known to eat the chicks of shore birds or even, rarely, monkeys, frogs and lizards.

From the field

Sunrise, sunset Sep 20 2007

By Andy Crawford, field crew

The end of each day in the bush is always a strange and wonderful time. Wherever I am at sunset (usually up to the elbows in plastic fish, ducks and crocodiles while bathing kiddies in a tin bath under an acacia tree) the soft orange glow on the trees, evening birdcalls and insect going-to-bed noises invariably make me pause and take notice.

It is an evocative time, a time to reflect on the day that has been and the night that is to come – with all its potential for drama and danger.

Did you know? - Superheated cheetahs Sep 3 2007

Although the cheetah is well-known for being the fastest animal on four legs and can accelerate to about 70km/h (43mi/h) in three seconds and reach a maximum speed of about 100km/h (60mph), it can’t keep this up for long.

Touching the Earth Aug 29 2007

By Tara Turkington, editorial team

It’ is winter and the sun is bathing the bush in an early-morning wash of light. We’’re bumping along slowly in our Volkswagen Combi on a dirt road near Berg-en-Dal in the Kruger National Park, when we see a long-legged dog running briskly towards us.

From the field

A matter of pride Jul 5 2007

By Andy Crawford, field crew

Brad and I assumed that we could continue our lives as a filming team once our child was born. We had great visions of slinging up a hammock in the back of the filming vehicle to rock the little guy to sleep, and Brad even went so far as to design a mini chair to attach to his camera box between our two front seats where Rio would happily sit, gurgling away contentedly as we bounced through aardvark holes and over anthills in our quest for interesting subjects to film. Stupidly we expected him to behave in a civilised manner and be quiet while we filmed these interesting subjects.
