Blacktip sharks unsettle divers Apr 11 2008

image

The visibility wasn’t great and the water was filled with jellyfish when the Earth-Touch crew went freediving at Aliwal Shoal, off the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) seemed excitable, passing close to the camera, and the crew felt rather uneasy.

Great white shark’s hunting kit Apr 3 2008

The great white shark senses what’s going on around it using its eyesight, special cells along its lateral line, and sensory cells on its nose, called ampullae of Lorenzini, which detect electrical fields.

Dark clouds and great whites Mar 25 2008

great white shark

A blanket of apprehension lay over the day’s divers – the crew from Earth-Touch and a few British tourists. There were dark storm clouds making their way towards the area we were going to try to find the great white sharks, and the surface of the sea was windswept, with white caps dotted across the ocean surface.

The boats were loaded, and soon we were pounding our way to Skip Skop, an area 7km (4mi) off the coast, with a ferocious reputation for great whites (Carcharodon carcharias). As we sped from the base, the excitement seemed to drain from the faces with every kilometre we travelled.

Did you know? Great white shark Mar 18 2008

The great white shark, which is named for its large size and white underbelly, is one of the ocean’s most powerful and awesome predators. But it’s really the great white’s scientific name, Carcharodon carcharias, which says it all – it means “jagged-toothed one”.

Push off, tiger Mar 6 2008

Things often happen while we are filming for Earth-Touch that we cannot show on video for practical reasons. Animals sometimes surprise us with their antics, and catch us off guard. Sometimes these stories can only be told with words – like what happened to me out at Aliwal Shoal yesterday.

Did you know? Tiger sharks Feb 9 2008

image
One of the more common species of large sharks is the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). These beautiful sharks prefer to live in warmer, shallow water and are often spotted just off the coast of more tropical regions. Tiger sharks also happen to be one of the easiest species of shark to identify, thanks to the dark stripes that run along the length of their bodies.
