Bats emerge at dusk Mar 20 2008
With a sound like rushing water, overlaid by squeaking, thousands of bats pour out of a cave and into the evening sky. In flight, they look like a whiplash across the sunset.
This is the scene just outside Khao Yai National Park in Thailand, where more than 1-million wrinkle-lipped bats roost communally in a cave in one of the hills.
Waiting in nearby trees are birds of prey, which dive into the column as it emerges from the cave. The many bats that survive the hunting birds may travel up to 20km (12mi) before they start the night’s foraging.
