Did you know? Manta rays Sep 12 2007

Manta rays Manta birostris are the world’s largest rays, and favour tropical and sub-tropical oceans.

Proportionately, the manta ray has one of the largest brains of any elasmobranch (fish with cartlaginous, non-bony bodies, including sharks, skates and rays.) This brain size makes manta rays highly social in behaviour.

Despite its large wingspan of up to 6m (20ft), the manta ray is harmless to humans.

Watch a manta ray swimming as if floating in the water, in the Earth-Touch clip, Plankton soup.

Mantas are often seen with remora fish, which travel beneath them, and with which they share a symbiotic relationship.
