Flickr group: pic of the day – Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep Apr 23 2008
Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) are found in the Rocky Mountain range that stretches across Northern America.
Both females (ewes) and males (rams) have substantial horns, but the ram’s horns can grow to weigh as much as 14kg (30 pounds).
This photo of a ewe was taken by our Earth-Touch Flickr group member Katie Lasalle-Lowery (AKA BigSkyKatie), using a Fuji FinePix S5000.
It is our Earth-Touch Flickr group “picture of the day”.
Katie said: “The photo was taken north of Tower Fall in Yellowstone National Park. We had stopped along a section of road to watch a herd of ewes and lambs scramble down the steep and loose scree. The descent was dramatic as rocks were crashing down.”
