Rhinos by numbers
13 Jan
Here in South Africa, we lost 333 rhinos to poaching in 2010. And things are not looking up this year. Five incidents of poaching were recorded in just the first ten days of 2011. If you’re in the dark about the poaching crisis, you’ll find some need-to-know facts in our slick infographic (click to enlarge).
Too lazy to read the infographic? Check out our video on the topic instead.

Great graphic. This slaughter makes me so damn angry; I can’t believe authorities can’t track the people organising the killing – especially if helicopters are involved. Oh: and I’m curious what others think: Will shooting poachers dead help stop the trade? Thinking of the drug industry and all…
As much as we might like to see poachers punished, I think the solution lies in cutting off demand. How do we make people understand that rhino horn powder has no medicinal properties? As long as the demand persists, the poaching will continue.
Happy rhino day!
The two authors of this guestpost have come up with their own theory about how to combat the poaching of rhinos.

Awesome guys! Really great, easy for people to understand and I think it will make people more aware of the situation. Will share as much as possible!
Thanks! We hope the message goes out far and wide!
Awesome. To the point. How do we get this to China?
I’d think that raising global awareness is the most important.
This site is doing alot in raising awareness in to the rhino poaching problem.
Also have a look at the stoprhinopoaching site, where can register as a supporter.
I wonder if this enormous upsurge in rhino poaching is linked to the influx of Chinese nationals and ‘investment’ into Africa? And possibly some under the table deal with African officials?
After all – it’s long known that the horns feed a Chinese superstition about penile erections, despite the ubiquity of Viagra. very sad.
There’s demand for this stuff mainly from ASIAN countries where every ridiculous superstition is believed.
The slaughter of these animals is just sick and ridiculous. It’s nice to see more people raising awareness to the situation. This blog had some of the best examples on why it is happening. It really makes me mad that the poachers are doing this to these animals.
all in the name of money, these people should be locked up for life.
