While dolphins work tirelessly to split up the main sardine shoals and gannets prepare to plunge into the water in search of a tasty treat, sharks are often the last Sardine Run predators to take advantage of the abundant fish stocks, darting in at the last moment to snatch a quick gulp. However, with an impressive sensory system (including pressure-sensitive cells to pick up movement in the water and electroreceptors to detect subtle signals emitted by prey), sharks have no trouble tracking down the sardines. In our latest Sardine Run infographic, we take a look at these apex predators, paying particular attention to the most common Sardine Run participant: the copper shark, or bronze whaler.
